Justin Petersen Named Principal of Liberty Middle School - effective July 2026

The School District of Pickens County Board of Trustees approved Mr. Justin Petersen as the next principal of Liberty Middle School at its meeting on March 23, 2026. His appointment will take effect July 1, 2026.

Mr. Petersen currently serves as assistant principal at R.C. Edwards Middle School, where he has been a key member of the school’s leadership team since 2022. He will succeed Dr. Lisa Cassidy, who was recently named principal of Liberty Elementary School.

Mr. Petersen is a highly relational and student-focused leader who understands what it takes to build a strong school culture while maintaining high expectations for teaching and learning,” said Superintendent Dr. Danny Merck. “His experience supporting teachers, strengthening instruction, and leading at the middle school level has prepared him well for this role. We are confident he will continue the positive trajectory at Liberty Middle School and serve the Liberty community with excellence.

Mr. Petersen brings a strong background in education, including experience as an instructional coach and classroom teacher prior to moving into school leadership. His work has focused on strengthening Tier 1 instruction, supporting Professional Learning Communities, and using data to drive student achievement. 

In his current role, he has led efforts in school safety, student support systems, teacher development, and schoolwide operations. He has also played a key role in building a positive school culture through student engagement initiatives and collaborative leadership structures.

Mr. Petersen holds a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision from Southern Wesleyan University and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.

As a leader, Mr. Petersen has shared his strong belief that every student can reach their full potential in a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment and is dedicated to preparing students for success in college, careers, and life. 

I am honored and excited for the opportunity to serve as principal of Liberty Middle School,” said Mr. Petersen. “Liberty has a strong tradition, and I look forward to partnering with students, staff, and families to build on that foundation. My goal is to ensure every student feels connected, supported, and prepared to take the next step in their learning.”

Mr. Petersen will assume leadership of Liberty Middle School on July 1, 2026.
